Morton Michael

We have been providing nanny insurance for fifteen years, and we insure nannies all over the country. For a nanny, having insurance is a sign of good practice - it shows future employers that she takes both her job and her responsibilities seriously, but, just as importantly, it also provides protection and peace of mind for the nanny. Our cover is for qualified or experienced nannies over the age of eighteen, and currently costs £55 per year. (experience does not need to be the formal experience of being a nanny. We are happy to insure nannies whose experience has been gained by raising their own family or working with children, perhaps as a registered childminder or in a nursery).

Nannies have the same legal responsibilities as any other childcare workers. Social services departments require registered childminders to have public liability insurance as a condition of registration. Nannies may not currently need to be registered but that does not mean that they don’t take the same professional risks as childminders. They do.

Public liability insurance covers your legal liabilities. A nanny would need this cover to protect herself should anything happen to a child in her care for which she was held responsible. Nobody likes to think of anything happening to children but accidents can and do happen. A nanny can still be sued by her employer on behalf of the child, or in the future by the child when he/she reaches the age of majority; even if the nanny is working as an employee at the time of the incident, and not in a self-employed capacity. A case can be brought many years after an incident has happened. It does not matter how friendly parents are, or how good their relationship with their nanny is. If something happens to their child and they feel the nanny bears some responsibility then they might well take action on behalf of the child. We are living in an increasingly litigious society and if the nanny does not have insurance then she must meet any damages awarded out of her own pocket.

Morton Michel are childcare insurance specialists and market leaders in this field. We are a family firm, set up in 1963 and we started out arranging insurance for playgroups. We have a long relationship with Albion Insurance company who underwrite many of our policies. We now insure thousands of registered childminders, pre-schools, nurseries, out of school clubs, holiday playschemes and many other childcare activities all over the country. Our policies reflect the technical knowledge gained over many years operating in the childcare insurance market and are very competitive. Nannies may also wish to insure their cars and take out personal accident insurance, personal belongings and household contents cover. We can offer quotations for all of these.
